Rare and Extreme Types of Migraines

Millions of people worldwide suffer from migraines.  Migraines range greatly in severity. When a migraine is mild, the pain may be nothing more than an annoyance. When a migraine is severe, it can inhibit your focus and concentration and at certain times, you might find it hard to do your job at work. For most people, the pain associated with migraines is not permanent and it will dissipate after several hours.

There are several different types (variations of migraines) that are named for the part of the body that they affect the most. Below, we take a closer look at the nine types of migraine variants.

Ophthalmic Migraine

Ophthalmic migraines are very uncommon types of migraine marked by frequent episodes of vision interruptions like blindness on one side. These episodes usually last anywhere from a few minutes to an hour.

Rare and Extreme Types of MigrainesHemiplegic Migraines

Hemiplegic migraines affect a very small amount – 0.03 percent of people in the United States. People with these kinds of headaches experience the inability to move or weakness on one portion of the body, interruptions in vision and speech, and other symptoms that often mimic a stroke. The paralysis is most commonly not permanent, but it may last for a few days. There are two kinds of hemiplegic migraines:

  • Sporadic Hemiplegic Migraine  — These happen to people who do not have the genetic disorder and do not have a family history of hemiplegic migraines.
  • Familial Hemiplegic Migraine — These happen to people who have inherited a particular gene.

Menstrual Migraine

Over half of females with migraines report a flare-up of symptoms right before they get their period. Migraines caused by menstruation are typically more intense and last much longer than headaches at other times.

Ophthalmoplegic Migraine

This kind of headache begins as a severe pain behind the eye and involves double vision or sometimes even paralysis of the eye muscles. This can result in a droopy eyelid. Sufferers can also throw up or have a seizure during this type of migraine.

Abdominal Migraine

Mostly children get this type of migraine. Symptoms generally last one to three days and include nausea and throwing up.

Basilar Migraine

Rare and Extreme Types of MigrainesThis usually causes dizziness and vertigo before the headache. However, it may also cause loss of coordination, ringing in ears or speech problems. It mimics a stroke.

Vertebrobasilar Migraine

A vertebrobasilar or vertiginous migraine is preceded by dizziness or vertigo. It is important to note that frequent and recurrent periods of vertigo may be caused by an issue in the lower part of the brain.

Chronic Migraine

Chronic migraines are defined as migraines experienced at least half of the days in a month. Some people have migraines every day. This type of migraine first appears when people are in their late teens or early 20s. Often these patients overmedicate with over-the-counter and prescription drugs that can actually make the situation worse.

Status Migrainosus

This is an extremely serious and rare migraine that sometimes causes pain so intense that patients must be hospitalized. Complications are often associated with this migraine including vomiting and nausea that lasts for days.
